Hi Girls and Guys,
There’s no need for small talk. Let’s all pretend I’ve been blogging weekly so this is not a surprise. Lmao! This is just a quick post to share something that has been doing me good for over a year now. Aside from my daily Duolingo lessons, this is the most consistent thing that I can boast of.
As a survivor of fibroids, period health becomes more than important to you. Not only do you need to check the flow, but you need to check the consistency of it as well. Oh, if I haven’t mentioned, this post is very TMI and bloody.
Years ago, a friend of mine mentioned menstrual cups to me and at that moment I thought it was the most ridiculous idea. I couldn’t imagine pushing plastic cups inside me to collect blood because in my head I imagined cups as hard as those tiny communion wine cups. I’m sorry if I’m ruining communion wine for some of you. I don’t even know why it’s the thing that came to mind. Ignorance is the devil’s assistant because instead of asking more questions I just tuned out of the conversation entirely. Fast forward to October 2020, I just randomly picked up one of these cups just to own one. IF I TELL YOU, PEOPLE, THAT IT IS ONE OF MY BEST DECISIONS EVER!!!! MENSTRUAL CUPS HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE! THEY ARE SO REVOLUTIONARY!!
I started using it in December. Before I did, I decided to read about it. I did a normal google search and then went on to get a degree in all things menstrual cups from The University of YouTube from the PUT A CUP IN IT school (https://www.youtube.com/c/PutACupInIt). My periods have never been the same since.
I love this pink. So vibrant and Fun. It also came in a fun packaging with comic strips about how using these cups will contribute to saving the world. I will insert that in my next post. It’s in German so I need to translate and mabr3! lol
Menstrual cups come in sizes that depend on whether or not you have had kids. So postpartum takes a larger size and prepartum take a smaller size. These are not set in stone, it is only advisable to go by this scheme. I actually have both sizes and I alternate depending on my mood. LMAO. This pink is small and I have one that’s bigger. The funny thing is the bigger one was also marked as small (on the package) so the sizes differ depending on the manufacturer. I prefer using the bigger one, to be honest. It’s more relaxing but the difference is also negligible so that’s that.
This is an introductory post so I will focus on the pros and cons of the menstrual cup. Let’s get right into that beginning with the reasons why I love the menstrual cup.
Pros:
Oh, where do I begin!!! I love this so much!
- Hygiene: This is primarily why we are here and it does a solid job. You can wear it for up to 12 hours without needing to change. It eliminates all the negativity that comes with wearing a sanitary towel; heat, rashes, constant trips to the bathroom, etc. It’s perfect!
- Freedom: You can wear anything! You can do anything! You can swim (for those who do). The possibilities are endless. Enough said!
- Stress Free: I don’t think I have to explain this.
- Recycle: Whenever I use the cup, I become an expert in recycling. I’m not making any waste to dispose off. I just use it, wash it and keep it for the next month. Cool right? You get a thank you wink from mother earth as well!! Well done!
- Cost effective: This will require math or tears if you like. I got my cup for 16euros in October 2020. So that’s roughly 120ghs. It’s still as good as new and I can keep using it until I get bored and decide I want a new colour. Sanitary towels generally cost about 5-7ghs. Let’s multiply that (monthly) by the number of years that I will be using my menstrual cup for. See where I’m going with it? One cup can serve you for yearsss. The only problem is I’ve some shops sell it for 3x the price but it’s still worth it. It’s those one time purchases. Also, @mensescup on Twitter has some pretty good deals so contact them! You’re welcome!
Although the menstrual cup sounds too good to be true, it has its downsides. Hmmmmm…I wish I didn’t have to say that because I want everyone to try it and see how great it is but I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t.
- Leakage: If you do not insert the cup well to fill the vaginal canal, it leads to leakage. This rarely happens mmom. In my 12+ months of use, I have experienced this about 3 times. This is not the end of the world oo. You can just take it out and fix it. There are so many videos on youtube that show you how to do this.
- Removal: Sometimes removing the cup can prove to be very difficult. There was one occasion where I just cried (but we all know I’m a cry baby so let’s not be discouraged). I find that in this situation, finding a good position helps.
Whew! This is long. I will end here. Go and try it guys and bring me positive feedback!! Also, if you have tried it and you want to share the beauty of it (or otherwise) just let me know. I will write another post about this another time. Love you guys and thanks for sticking around.
